Trash & Recovery

Deleted items go to the Trash first, giving you a chance to recover them before permanent deletion.

How deletion works

StashSync.app uses a two-step deletion model:

  1. Move to Trash — the item is removed from your dashboard but not permanently deleted. It moves to the Trash view and remains fully recoverable.
  2. Delete permanently — removes the item forever. This cannot be undone.

Trashed items do not count toward your plan's item limit.

Moving items to the Trash

  • Single item: Click the (more actions) button on the item card → select Delete → confirm.
  • From the note editor: Click the Trash icon in the top toolbar → confirm with Yes in the inline prompt.
  • Multiple items: Click each item's checkbox to select, then press Delete or Backspace, or use the Delete button in the bulk action bar.

Viewing the Trash

Click Trash in the left sidebar to open the Trash view. The sidebar shows a count badge when there are trashed items. The Trash view includes notes, bookmarks, files, stashes, and tags.

Filtering and searching in Trash

The Trash view has its own filter chips at the top — click All, Notes, Bookmarks, Files, Stashes, or Tags to narrow the list. There is also a search bar to find items by name within the Trash, and a sort toggle to switch between newest-first and oldest-first.

Recovering items

Single item

Click the (more actions) button on a trashed item → select Restore. The item returns to your dashboard with all its original content, tags, and stash assignment intact.

Restore all of a type

Each section (Notes, Bookmarks, etc.) has a Restore all button that appears when multiple items of that type are in the Trash.

Bulk restore

Click the Select (checkbox) icon in the Trash header to enter select mode. Check the items you want, then click Restore in the bulk action bar at the bottom.

Permanently deleting items

Single item

Click the button on a trashed item → select Delete permanently → confirm in the dialog.

Bulk permanent delete

In select mode, select the items you want to remove and click Delete in the bulk action bar → confirm.

Permanently deleting files requires an internet connection. This option is disabled while offline.

Emptying the Trash

Click Empty Trash in the Trash view header to permanently delete everything currently in the Trash at once. A confirmation dialog shows the total count before proceeding.

Emptying the Trash is permanent and cannot be undone. Files deleted this way are removed from cloud storage and are not recoverable. Always review the Trash view before emptying it.
